Jené Gutiérrez, MA, MS, LMFT-A

Welcome to my practice! I am a licensed marriage and family therapist associate who works with individuals, couples, partners, and families who want to improve the quality of their relationships. I am supervised by Jennifer Reeves, MA, LMFT-S, CST-S.

Relational anxiety is a common experience in our intimate relationships and can impact the strength and satisfaction of our connections. Cultivating insight and learning new tools to communicate with each other is easier said than done. Many stressors can affect our ability to recognize patterns that no longer serve our relationships and the relational values we uphold. I help people in all stages and styles of relationships nurture the bonds that are most meaningful to them. I especially enjoy working with relational problems that intersect with issues related to grief/loss, spiritual trauma, sex/sexuality, and marginalized identities/social locations including 2SLGBTQIA+, BIPOC, kink, and polyamorous/non-monogamous communities.

Making the decision to see a relationship therapist can be daunting in itself. Providing a warm and accepting atmosphere is one foundation of my practice. My initial priority is to use curiosity to connect with you in order to cultivate the trust and safety required for therapeutic vulnerability. I wholeheartedly believe in and respect the autonomy and divinity of each person. I take a non-pathologizing approach and do not look for what’s “wrong” with clients. I prefer to see my role as a guide or witness accompanying others on their journey toward preferred ways of being and relating.

My post-graduate work in the arts and sciences has cultivated an integrated and holistic style to helping people. Consciousness exploration and creative expression are the pillars of my modality. I am trained in the Hakomi method, a somatic mindfulness intervention, and primarily use this method to explore consciousness with my clients. In addition to somatic mindfulness, I take a creative collaborative-narrative approach in helping people re-author the stories of their lives. I have a trauma- and oppression-informed therapeutic lens that acknowledges and seeks to offset the harmful impact of colonialism and systemic oppression on the conceptualization and treatment of mental health in the West. Liberation psychology, decolonization, depth psychology, and the power of the archetypal imagination deeply inform my practice and the relational values I support, including autonomy, respect, and freedom within our personal relationships. When I made the decision to become a therapist, I intentionally chose a marriage and family therapy program that prioritized systemic thinking and perceiving individuals/partners/families and their problems as part of many interdependent systems. Many of these systems have been and currently are harmful to our well-being and peace of mind.

My own struggles in relationships and the grief I’ve experienced have led me to profound transformations that my own therapist has supported. While I take responsibility for these transformations, I could not have been as prepared to embrace change without the support of our therapeutic relationship. I believe that every soul possesses the power and strength to thrive despite trauma, oppression, heartbreak, loss, change, and upheaval, and I consider it a great privilege to work with clients in exploring and re-writing stories that align with the values and meaning they wish to create.

If you are ready to explore and collaborate together on new relational stories, please reach out to me for a free 15 minute consultation to see if we might be a good fit.
